The Mac Mini M6 vs the Windows Mini PC Swarm: Apple Just Asked for $300 More — and the Swarm Said "Cool Story" (September 2026)
The Mac Mini M6 vs the Windows Mini PC Swarm: Apple Just Asked for $300 More — and the Swarm Said "Cool Story" (September 2026)
Monday Mini PC vs Mac Mini — September 28, 2026. For two years, the answer to "what mini PC should I buy?" was embarrassingly easy: the M4 Mac mini at $599. It was the value king, the desk-slab of the people, the machine every reviewer (me included) told their mom to buy. Then September 22 happened, and Apple shipped the M6 Mac mini at $899 — a $300 price increase over the M4's launch price, in the middle of a global memory and SSD crunch. As Wirecutter bluntly put it, the bump is "due in part to the global chip shortage and the mini PC's success."
Success tax, ladies and gentlemen. You built the category; now pay the toll.
So today we're running the weigh-in: the new M6 Mac mini against the hungriest Windows mini PCs money can buy right now, with live USD and CAD pricing I pulled fresh this morning from Amazon US and Amazon Canada. Spoiler: the swarm has never smelled blood like this.
The New King's Crown Is Made of Glass
The 2026 Mac mini arrived in the same adorable chassis as the 2024 model — no design changes — with the M6 (12-core CPU, 12-core GPU) and an M5 Pro option up top. Macworld confirmed the announcement landed August 25 with shipping starting September 22. But the config ladder is where the eyebrow raises happen:
| Config | Launch Price |
|---|---|
| M6, 16GB / 256GB | $899 |
| M6, 16GB / 512GB | $1,099 |
| M6, 24GB / 512GB | $1,299 |
| M5 Pro, from | $1,699 |
Sixteen gigs of RAM and 256GB of storage at the base of a $899 machine. MacRumors' review roundup title says the quiet part loud: "A Good But No Longer 'Insanely Great' Deal." Meanwhile, the old M4 Mac mini — now a discontinued relic — is sitting on Amazon US at $1,049.99 (offers from $838.66), which tells you everything about how supply-constrained the whole category is. Even Apple's own leftover stock commands a premium now.

To be fair to Apple, the pitch has changed. Reuters reported that Apple is marketing the new desktops to corporate buyers as cheaper than renting data centers — the M6 mini isn't being sold as a budget PC anymore, it's being sold as an edge-AI appliance. That's a legitimate story, especially for local inference work. But at the register, the M4-era "insanely great deal" halo is gone.
The Swarm Attacks From Below: Beelink SER9 Pro

Here's where my PC-builder heart starts doing victory laps. The Beelink SER9 Pro, running AMD's Ryzen 7 H255 (8 cores / 16 threads, up to 4.9GHz, Radeon 780M with 12 CUs), is on Amazon US right now at $689 with 24GB of LPDDR5X-6400 and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. Let me do the comparison math for you:
- $210 less than the M6 mini's sticker
- +8GB more RAM than the base Mac mini
- +768GB more storage — the M6's 256GB is honestly small in 2026
- USB4, 2.5GbE, and — crucially — Windows/Linux, so it runs Steam, emulators, Proxmox, whatever you want
The SER9 has been the homelab community's sweetheart all year (HomeLabPicks calls the 32GB ceiling "the decision point, not a synthetic benchmark" — fair warning that LPDDR5X is soldered), and ServeTheHome's review of Beelink's dual-10GbE GTi15 Ultra showed just how pro these little boxes have gotten. Over in Canada, the SER9 family gets spicy: the SER9 with 32GB LPDDR5X and 1TB SSD is listed at CAD $589.06, and the SER9 MAX with 10GbE sits at CAD $940.93. Apple wants CAD $1,239.99 for a 256GB M6 mini. Read that again.
The Swarm Attacks From Above: Strix Halo Monsters

The other front of the war is the local-LLM tier, where AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ 395 "Strix Halo" APU (16 cores / 32 threads, up to 5.1GHz, Radeon 8060S, up to 128GB of LPDDR5X-8000) has turned mini PCs into legitimate AI workstations. Tom's Hardware covered GMKTec announcing the EVO-X2 at the AMD Greater China Channel Summit; Minisforum went further at IFA 2026 with the MS-S1 line and an AI Agent NAS built on the new Ryzen AI Max+ Pro 495.

The Minisforum MS-S1 MAX at $2,599 is my favorite of the bunch because it keeps the enthusiast escape hatches: a PCIe x16 slot, dual 10GbE, USB4 V2 at 80Gbps, and a 320W PSU — it's basically a shrunken workstation that can even rack-mount in 2U, as TechRadar gleefully reported. The GMKtec EVO-X2 goes full memory monster at $3,499.99 with 128GB LPDDR5X and a 50-TOPS NPU. Compare that to the Mac Studio M5 Max at $2,449 (36GB/512GB) and the calculus gets brutal: Apple wins on efficiency and ecosystem, but if your job is running 70B-class models locally, 36GB of unified memory is a rounding error against 128GB.

One Canadian quirk worth flagging: Amazon.ca's SER9 listings bounce around harder than a rubber check — the same SER9 Pro 24GB/1TB config shows at $969 from one listing and $999-after-coupon from another, with stock counts in single digits on several. Mini PC pricing in CAD is volatile; the $589.06 SER9 32GB listing is the outlier deal as of this morning, so if that's your lane, don't sleep on it.
The Verdict
Buy the Mac mini M6 if: you're already in Apple's ecosystem, your workload is Final Cut/Logic/AI-on-macOS, and you value that silent 5-watt idle over raw configurability. It's still a magnificent machine — Apple's efficiency and the Thunderbolt dock ecosystem (those Satechi and UGREEN mini hubs with built-in NVMe enclosures are a whole hobby) are real advantages. Just know you're paying $899 for a 256GB machine, and budget for the dock-and-SSD tax.
Buy the Beelink SER9 Pro if: you want maximum box-per-dollar, you game, you tinker, you run Plex/Proxmox/emulators, or you're Canadian and that CAD $589 SER9 listing made your eye twitch with desire. $210 saved buys a very nice monitor arm — or a whole extra mini PC for the homelab rack.
Buy a Strix Halo box if: your 2026 is about local AI. 128GB of shared memory at EVO-X2 pricing undercuts Apple's equivalent memory tiers by a mile, and the MS-S1 MAX's PCIe slot means you can drop a real GPU in later instead of buying a whole new computer.
The funniest subplot of the week: ETA PRIME's recent SteamOS-on-mini-PC videos (the AtomMan G7 PT beating Valve's Steam Machine at its own game) show the Windows mini PC scene innovating in directions Apple simply doesn't play in. Meanwhile Apple's answer to the value question is... a corporate AI pitch. The swarm is winning the headlines, and after this price hike, I suspect it'll win a lot of shopping carts too.
My money this week: SER9 Pro in the US at $689. In Canada, that $589.06 SER9 32GB listing if it's still breathing when you click.
